Brazilian Hostel Reviews

OZTEL HOSTEL, BOTAFOGO, RIO DE JANEIRO:  $9 -$34 per night, dorms & private rooms available.

A hostel that’s not really close to much and also not the best vibe we’ve had at a hostel, the free breakfast was really good and the staff were friendly, but on the whole it was quite dirty. Having been our first Brazilian hostel we didn’t really know what to expect, they had hot water and air conditioning in dorms which was good, also a bar and kitchen, although drinks were quite expensive.  We decided to only stay one night as we wanted to be closer to the beach.
5/10
RIO BACKPACKERS, COPACABANA: $15 – $56 per night, private rooms and dorms availbale.
Located halfway up a large hill and Copacabana beach just a few minutes walk away. Also not too clean (we’re starting to see a trend here) some staff were friendly, others rude. They have a TV room and a rickety pool table, and also do a free breakfast. Dorms have air con and small lockers. Not the best. 5/10
LAGOON BACKPACKERS, BUZIOS:  $15 per night, Dorms.
Lots of friendly people and good staff, Good kitchen facilities. Not the best beds in the world and our fan didn’t work. Hot showers but a pretty rank bathroom. Small Lockers for valuables and free WiFi. Close to a supermarket and 10 minutes to Geriba Beach.  4/10
LAGOA BEACH HOSTEL, BUZIOS: $15 per night, dorms & private rooms available.
Finally a good hostel. Has a pool, it’s very social. Beds are made every day. Very good vibe and great location – 2 minutes from the beach. Helpful staff and a sea view. Good kitchen and free breakfast, although our shower caught fire whilst using it (see Brazil page 😉) we still really like the hostel.
P.s LOTS OF MOSQUITOS. 8/10
MANGO TREE HOSTEL, RIO DE JANEIRO: $22 per night, dorms & private rooms available.
A large hostel close to Copacabana Beach, has an outdoor bar, bike rental and air conditioning, staff are helpful  but this hostel is overpriced for what you get. triple bunk beds in rooms means its crowded and bathrooms are quite far from dorm rooms. free breakfast. 5/10
CHE LAGARTO, RIO DE JANERIO:  $14 per night, dorms & private rooms available.
On the same road as Mango Tree hostel, but nearly half the price, beds were more comfortable and at nearly half the price you can’t go wrong.  Has a  bar which is actually in the reception which is a bit strange. helpful staff and good air conditioning, showers were hot and powerful. free breakfast. 7/10
CHE LAGARTO, FLORIANOPOLIS: $14 per night, dorms & private rooms available.
Not as good as its rio counterpart, although their staff were very friendly, good vibe in the hostel but not the cleanest place we have stayed. bar stays open until 11pm and it is located near to the town and the beach. activities are planned every night and you also get free breakfast 6/10
ISLANDER HOSTEL, FLORIANOPOLIS: $16 per night for 4 person private room. dorms available.
Brand new hostel, only 3 months old. Excellent kitchen and facilities, great room terrace. they are doing a opening promotion for a 4 person private room for only 20 Reals per person which is less than half what you’d normally pay for an average hostel. a must do if your visiting Florianopolis any time soon.  rooms were very clean and they have excellent bathrooms. 100 yards from the beach and there is a local shop next door.  staff could have been a little friendlier but they are new to the world of hostels..they’ll learn 9/10
CONCEPT DESIGN HOSTEL, FOZ DE IGUACU: $12 per night for dorms.
Another new hostel, this one a year and a half old but looks like it was opened yesterday, VERY clean, comfortable beds & amazing hot showers, also has a pool and tv area, not the best location but easy to get to a bus stop to get to iguasu falls. free breakfast is good (always a bonus when they have a cheese toastie maker) 10/10
